Visual Math
Helpful website that provides short, mostly silent, videos providing visuals for teachers, as well as students about key concepts. Website link above provides insight into how to use the website and videos to full capacity. Menu on right hand side of web page lists “Playlists” to choose from (i.e. videos for “integer division,” “subtraction,” “counting and quantity” etc.).
Which One Doesn’t Belong provides a math challenge to stimulate math discussion
Number Talks

Would you rather…?
Website gives prompts with images asking students to consider which of two real life scenarios they’d rather choose. Use examples as inspiration to create your own! Excellent activity to build reasoning and analysis allowing students to apply thinking strategies and content knowledge. Students need to provide mathematical justification for their thinking. Adapt prompts with different numbers as needed for different grades. Click “Older Posts” to continue to look for a wide variety of options.
Estimation activities
Activities to support estimation, including SPAT! (available from: http://www.stevewyborney.com/?p=893)

Money Talks
This website is FULL of ideas and resources. They have info on how to host a Money Fair, how to save money on renewable energy, and how to prioritize purchases when you have saved money. Many of their lessons are even connected to specific provinces to help make the learning specific to the economic landscape of BC. Click on “Resources” and choose “School Program” to see options that are available.
Money Coach
Focused lessons for Grades 4 - 7, Credit Counseling Society created a series of lessons to help students understand things like how to save, how to budget for a cell phone, how to grocery shop economically. They are practical lessons that could be really helpful!
Junior Accountants (JABC)
This non profit is based in BC with the goal of helping students develop their understanding of how to responsibly save and spend money. Check out their “Programs” section and find the program that might be a good fit for you (all free!). They often will link you up with a local banker or business person in your community, but since the pandemic they have provided teachers with access to the resources/units to do themselves. Don’t be scared to “sign up” or email to express interest in one of the programs.

Clothesline math
Clothesline math is an interactive number line where students order whole numbers, fractions, decimals or negative integers. The clothesline can start and end at different numbers to differentiate it based on student needs. It builds mathematical reasoning and requires students to explain and justify their mathematical decisions.
Analyzing graphs
Slow Reveal Graphs are created by educators and shared on this website. The goal is to dissect a graph piece by piece, slowly revealing more information about the graph to students via a slide deck (which is downloadable generally as a Google Slide deck). Click on the lesson to see a quick description of the kind of graph that’s focused on and to find the clickable link to the slide deck.
You’ll find a huge collection of graphs that have already all been formatted onto a printable one page to give to students. Each set of graphs comes with prompting questions for students to explore and space to record their analysis of the data. See “About GOW” in the menu for more ideas of how to use the graphs.

Indigenous Math
Math Catcher ~ storytelling
Math Catcher uses Indigenous storytelling to encourage an interest in math for students. Created by two professors from UBC and SFU, the goal was to introduce math to Aboriginal students in context of their culture. The creators worked with different Aboriginal groups to gather stories that they could tell that had math interwoven in them. They have received positive feedback about the animated stories and activities they have created from different Aboriginal groups across Canada. The link below is a recent article that provides more information on the reception and goal of their website.
